Winter Talk – Borneo Confrontation Remembered – 60 Years On

Col A K Miller CBE

2026 marks the end of The Argylls’ involvement in the Borneo Confrontation campaign 60 years ago.  In 1962, northern Borneo consisted of the British protectorate of Brunei and the colonies of Sarawak and North Borneo (later known as Sabah). The rest of the island was made up of the Indonesian provinces of Kalimantan.  Britain hoped to incorporate Brunei, Sarawak and North Borneo – all close to independence at that time – into the Federation of Malaysia, along with Singapore and the states of the Malayan Peninsula.  However, President Sukarno of Indonesia was wary of continued British influence in the region. He wanted to extend Indonesian control on the island by adding these territories to the rest of Kalimantan.
Between April 1964 – April 1966 the 1st Battalion carried out three tours, the first in eastern Sarawak of Borneo, part of the Malaysian Federation, and the later ones in western Sarawak.  The threat came from incursions by the Indonesians across the border from Kalimantan.  This talk will attempt to convey the nature of this conflict and how the Jocks conducted operations in the jungle.
The talk will be led by Col A K Miller aided by a veteran of the campaign, Capt Andrew Dewar Durie who, as a Platoon Commander and then Intelligence Officer, served on all three tours.  He will recall the reality of life in the jungle and provide insights to his involvement and experiences.
