Colourful Heritage Lecture – Force K6: The Forgotten Soldiers of Dunkirk in the Scottish Highlands
Image from 19th November 1942 and shows Indian army at King George V Park, Golspie. Full copyright to Golspie Heritage Society.
Dr Saqib Razzaq
During the Second World War, around 1,700 men of Force K6, a largely Punjabi Muslim contingent of the Royal Indian Army Service Corps, came to Scotland following the evacuation from Dunkirk. Stationed across the Highlands, including Lairg and Golspie in Sutherland, these soldiers became part of Scotland’s wartime story, yet their experiences remain little known.
In this Winter Talk, Dr Saqib Razzaq of Colourful Heritage explores their remarkable journey, their lives in the Highlands and the connections they forged with local communities. Thirteen of these soldiers, originally from what is now Pakistan, lie buried across the Scottish Highlands, creating what might be described as a “corner of Pakistan in Scotland” — a lasting connection between the two places.
Hosted at Stirling Castle, home of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Regimental Museum, the talk brings the story of Force K6 into conversation with Scotland’s wider military heritage, exploring the service and sacrifice of soldiers from different backgrounds during the Second World War. It is an opportunity to learn about a shared wartime service, forgotten histories and the enduring connections between Scotland and South Asia.
About the Speaker
Dr Saqib Razzaq holds a doctorate in Chemistry from the University of St Andrews and previously worked as a Chemical Patents Analyst. As Head of Research at Colourful Heritage, she uses her research and analytical skills to uncover and preserve the stories of Scotland’s early South Asian and Muslim communities.
She helped develop a digital Schools Resource Pack in partnership with Glasgow Museums, exploring South Asian contributions in both World Wars and Scotland’s history of migration, entrepreneurship and political involvement. In 2023, she was instrumental in establishing the ‘GlaswegAsians – Contributions of South Asians in World War 2’ exhibition at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, highlighting the often-overlooked contribution of South Asians to Scotland’s wartime history.

Winter Talk – Air Warfare in Ukraine – are Air Forces becoming obsolete?
Lt Col Mike Blair
The Ukraine War has now endured longer than WW1. Nobody in the Western defence establishment thought it would turn out like it has when it began in 2022. The Air War is the biggest surprise – instead of the Russians taking control of the air as the US did in the Gulf War of 1990 and in Iraq in 2003, the air forces are on the back foot with drones evidently dominant. Mike Blair will explain the background to the see-saw between air forces and their Ground Based Air Defence opposition, and why the Air War in Ukraine has turned out as it has. This is a part of military affairs that we rarely/virtually never hear about, but which is now clearly going to be vital to the British Army in future.
About the Speaker
Lt Col Mike Blair was commissioned as a regular officer into the Royal Artillery in 1975, leaving after 16 years service to become a lawyer. Joining the TA, he commanded a battery in 105 (Scottish) Regt RA before working at HQ 51 Highland Bde and as an LO to HQ ARRC. He is currently Chairman of the RA Council Scotland.
